Based on the book

I just finished watching the movie Ella Enchanted. The movie is based on the book Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. My Children's Lit teacher picked the book for us to read and discuss in class.

The book is fantastic: The story is a bout Ella of Frell who received a magic spell gift from a fairy. But the gift is actually a curse ... The gift is obedience. Ella must do whatever she is told and if she doesn't she makes herself ill until she can take it and does what she was told to do. Later she takes a journey to find the fairy and have her gift removed but finds that she is the one who can break her own spell. This book takes the tale of Cinderella and adds many wonderful twists.

My favorite part of the book is when 5-year-old Ella discovers that she has to be obedient. Mandy another character in the book makes Ella a cake for her birthday and without thinking tells her to Eat! wich is a command. Ella keeps eating her birthday cake and she doesn't know why she has to keep eating it. While eating it she starts to cry until her mother realizes what was happening and tells her to stop.

The movie is ok: The movie is what it says 'based on the book' besides Ella's curse there is not much in common between the two. I don't know if I can say that I liked the movie or would have liked it without reading the book. There are a couple scenes like when Ella breaks her curse that I did like but it is a movie that is trying too hard to be funny and I think losses the purpose of the book.
